France 1-1 Italy: Three tactical lessons from a night of character in Paris

A week ago, Italy were booed off the pitch in Rome. On Friday night, they walked off the Stade de France with a point, a clean bill of character and the feeling that they could have taken all three.

France 1-1 Italy was not a game Italy controlled. Zinedine Zidane's side had 64.6% of the ball and put eight shots on target to Italy's two. Michael Olise gave them the lead with a superb free kick on 55 minutes. But Roberto Mancini's team defended with discipline, equalised through Alessandro Bastoni on 68 minutes and, after Dayot Upamecano's late red card, came within the width of the crossbar of winning it.
