How Cagliari became Serie A’s surprise package

If you are new to Serie A, you might need a quick introduction. Cagliari are the club of Sardinia, the island off Italy’s west coast. They play at the Unipol Domus, a ground that holds just over 16,000 people. They won their only league title in 1970, led by the legendary striker Gigi Riva, and for most of the last half-century they have been a club that measures success in survival.

This season is different. After six games, Cagliari are fourth in Serie A with 13 points, ahead of Milan, Juventus and Napoli, and level on goals conceded with the meanest defence in the league.
