Grind vs flair: Inside Serie A's dead-level title race

Inter, the champions who keep winning when they play badly, against Lazio, the grinders who have suddenly found their goals. Level on points, level on goal difference, with Roma, Como, Milan and Napoli behind them. A deep analysis of the two routes to the top of Serie A, and which one is built to last.

On Tuesday night, Lazio scored six goals at Sassuolo. On Wednesday night, Inter scored none of their own at Venezia and still won 2-0, thanks to two late own goals. By the end of the two evenings, the top of Serie A looked exactly as it had before: Inter and Lazio level, now on 25 points, with identical goal differences of plus 15.

It is tempting to turn that into a simple story: Lazio, the side playing with flair, against Inter, the champions grinding their way through. The truth is more interesting. Both teams have done both things this season, and the way they have got here tells us a lot about how the race might unfold.
