Where are Ju? What’s actually gone wrong at Juventus

Three defeats in nine league games, 11 goals scored despite around €149m of summer signings, and a coach asking whether his players ‘have it in them’. Before Sunday’s emotional meeting with Napoli, we diagnose what has gone wrong at Juventus: The attack, the intensity, the squad depth and years of instability.

Luciano Spalletti did not hide after Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat at Genoa. “First of all, we have to apologise to the fans for the performance,” he told DAZN, according to Juventus News 24. “Tonight we lost them in front, we lost them at the back, we lost them everywhere,” he said of the duels. “Not much fight, and this is an issue that has been there since the start of the season.”

Coming from a coach as experienced as Spalletti, that is a striking admission. After nine games, Juventus have 14 points, 11 fewer than joint leaders Inter and Lazio, and six behind Como in fourth. They have lost three league games already. They have scored 11 goals, fewer than any other team in the top eight.
